‘Green’ Drawing

Focus on leaves and flowers in this class where instructor, Howard Hansen says he can teach anyone to draw! Explore various drawing tools and enjoy the ambiance of the conservatory while you draw. Introduction to Ikebana

The beauty of this art form, Ikebana, is its simplicity. It can be done anywhere, anytime, with anything you can find. The basic Sogetsu curriculum teaches you principles of space, balance, and color to help you develop the artistic sense you’ll need to create freestyle arrangements on your own. So grab a pair of scissors and be prepared to be amazed by your own creativity! Class meets on 4 Tuesdays.

Around the Color Wheel in Watercolors

The Conservatory loves you!
Instructor: Susan Waite
This watercolor class will focus on choosing pigments to get the colors and values you desire. We will concentrate on one or two colors at a time, as we paint from the nature surrounding us at the Conservatory.. We will explore mixing a variety of greens, since we are in the green Northwest. Great introduction to watercolors for beginners, as well as broadening your understanding of this medium for advanced painters. Dazzle yourself with beautiful color mixtures! Watercolor supplies available to “rent” for the class duration, if you don’t already have them. $5 material fee due to instructor. Class meets on 4 Fridays.

Drawing and Printing From Nature

The Conservatory loves you!
Instructor: Lisa Snow Lady
Start with a sketch, and then work to develop your drawing in paint, paper or print. Experiment in the art process and come away from the class with skills and beautiful results. We will learn relief printing techniques using linoleum blocks and a soft material known as safety-cut. We will also make hand-printed monotypes and printings from other materials and will incorporate collage into our prints. Comparison of water-soluble and oil based inks and different types of paper will be discussed. Come ready to play! No prior printmaking experience necessary. Lisa Snow Lady has a BFA from the University of Washington and has been painting and printmaking for over 15 years. Class meets on 6 Thursdays.

Paper Garden

The Conservatory loves you!
Instructor: Siri Kroesen
Explore the botanical world through collage. The class will spend time drawing and observing the plants in the conservatory followed by time in the studio creating collages and mixed media works. Class inspired by the book, “The Paper Garden, An Artist (begins her work) at 72. Class supports both beginning and advanced students. Collage materials will include painted papers, found objects, handmade papers and print transfers, as well as exploring an archival approach to collage. Class meets on 5 Thursdays.
